Las direcciones tienen el FP 1111 1111 (por lo tanto una dirección multicast siempre empieza por FF). Las direcciones multicast no pueden ser utilizadas como direcciones origen ni como destinos intermedios en una cabecera de routing.
Estructura de una dirección multicast en IPV6:
- Octeto de mayor orden. Siempre es 1111 1111
- Flags. En este campo los tres primeros bit están reservados. El cuarto denominado Transient (T), cuando tiene el valor 0 indica que el grupo multicast es una dirección 'well-known' permanentemente asignada. Si el valor es 1, indica que es una dirección usada temporalmente.
- Scope. Indica el ámbito de la red IPV6 para el que el paquete multicast debe ser propagado. Es un valor desde 0 a 0xF. Significado según el valor:

- Group ID. Identificador de grupo. Identifica el grupo de multicast concreto al que nos referimos dentro de un determinado ámbito. Los identificadores de grupos permanentemente asignados son idenpendientes del ámbito. Los grupos temporales (transient) son relevantes sólo para un ámbito determinado. Las direcciones multicast desde FF01:: hasta FF0F están reservadas son direcciones well-known.
